3. Your privacy

Your shared content

Whilst we have a robust acceptable use policy and inform all users who will receive your shared Lists and / or Clues via e-mail links of the importance of not forwarding this information to others without your permission, we cannot prevent this from happening. You should therefore only share content with people you can trust and know well.

Default privacy settings

When you first create Gift Clues or a Gift List a unique web page address (URL) is created for that posted content.  This means that Gift Clues and Gift Lists are ready for sharing and viewable by anyone who has access to that unique web page address.  By sharing your Gift List or Gift Clues using the site’s functionality you are providing access for others to view that posted content.

Other privacy settings

Whenever you share your posted content (Gift Lists and / or Gift Clues) you are making it publically available and your posted information is no longer private.  This means that anyone who knows the unique web page address (URL) of your posted content will be able to access and view its content.

When you share posted content using the site’s e-mail functionality, an e-mail is sent to those contacts you have chosen to share it with containing a link to the unique web page address.  If those contacts click on the link they will then have access to the information you have shared.  If you share your posted content using the social sharing buttons on the site a link to your posted content will be displayed in the relevant social feed.  We cannot prevent these links from being forwarded to other parties by their recipients.  If you share your posted content using the site’s e-mail functionality we do advise all recipients of shared posted content that to forward links to posted content without the owners permission is in contravention of our Acceptable use policy and Privacy policy.

If you want to temporarily remove a list from public view you can do this by clicking on the ‘MAKE LIST PRIVATE’ button which can be found at the top of any list you have created.  The list can also be made viewable again by clicking on the ‘MAKE LIST PUBLIC’ button so that those with whom it was originally shared will be able to view it again – see ‘Making a list Private’ below.

Sharing your Gift Clues

Once you have shared your Gift Clues they cannot be made private or “unshared” and will remain accessible and viewable to those with whom you have shared them (or anyone else who has access to the unique URL for the webpage displaying your Gift Clues).  Gift Clues may be deleted individually or as a whole from your relevant account page (My Gift Clues) and will no longer be viewable by any party.  However any remaining Gift Clues or new ones added will still be viewable.

Whenever a Gift List is shared any gift clues you have set up will automatically be shared with those recipients and remain accessible (public) unless they are deleted from your relevant account page (My Gift Clues).

Publishing your Gift Lists and Clues elsewhere

There may be occasions when you would like to use the unique web page address of your posted content to allow access to a list without sharing it with others directly using the site’s functionality.  An example might be if you want to place a link to your Gift List in a blog, online article or send it as a text message.

This can be done by using the “Share” function in any list.  Clicking “Share” displays a pop up box that has the unique web page URL displayed.  Copy this link to publish the page URL as appropriate without directly sharing it with any other contacts.

Making a list private

Please see our FAQs for additional information.  If you want to temporarily remove a list from public view this can be done by clicking the ‘MAKE LIST PRIVATE’ button in any List.  This means the unique web page address is still available (it is stored in our database) but not accessible or viewable by anyone.  By clicking the ‘MAKE LIST PUBLIC’ button the page will again become accessible to all those contacts with whom it was originally shared.

If you want to permanently remove a list from public access that you have previously shared with other contacts, you can use the “Unshare” function.  This will make the list private by deleting the page’s unique web address, prevent any previous links to it working and delete it from any other registered users who have saved it in their account. If you want to subsequently re-share this list with new contacts then this can be done using the normal “Share” function.  Doing this will generate a new unique web page address for the list and it can subsequently be shared with new contacts of your choosing.

Search engines and privacy

When a list is made public it is possible for a search engine or other web crawlers to see the page. However, by default, the generated page automatically has some software code included that tells the search engine or web crawler not to index the page. This means that although the search engine can see the page it should not add that page to its search results. As we cannot control all search engine or web crawler functionality you should be aware of this and exercise care when making any posted content public.

Security and you takes the security and privacy of its website very seriously and is committed to maintaining high levels of security within our computer systems and processes. All pages on our website are protected using high grade 128 bit encryption. This means that any page you are viewing will have been encrypted before being transmitted over the internet.

It is therefore very unlikely that anyone else has been able to read any pages you view or interact with on our website as they travel across the internet. Just look for the padlock at the top of the page in the address bar to verify a secure connection and valid security certificate for
